Improving Public Discussion About... Brexit

In our 'Preaching to the Non-converted' campaign, we've been thinking about how to communicate beyond our echo chambers. Brexit is the big issue of this election. It's also one of the most divisive political issues of our time. So often the rhetoric post-referendum has focussed on shutting down discussion, rather than opening up dialogue.

Below are some issues to consider when discussing Brexit. These are especially true when you are talking to an audience who may not agree with you - whether with family and friends, on social media, at work, or in public debate.

  • Think about values
  • Be specific
  • Frame your argument
  • Provide evidence
  • Focus on quality of life
  • Use social norms
